According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), more than 15 million people in the US have symptoms of atopic dermatitis. The most common method of dealing with the condition is to apply a topical corticosteroid cream to relieve itching and inflammation and, hopefully, stop the itch-scratch cycle and reduce the risk of secondary infection. Antibiotic or antifungal medications are often prescribed if secondary infection does occur. The limitation of these treatments is painfully evident, especially for those struggling to manage the outbreaks.

There may be another solution that doesn’t involve messy creams or prescription medications.

A study, reported in the June 2005 British Journal of Dermatology, found that silver has both anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties when applied to the ears of mice with induced allergic contact dermatitis. After four days of treatment with one nanocrystalline silver cream, researchers observed significant reductions in swelling, redness and inflammation. They also found that nanocrystalline silver brings about inflammatory cell death.

These findings suggest that silver manages dermatitis outbreaks on several levels. The anti-inflammatory action soothes irritated skin and clears up the outbreak. As the skin heals, the antimicrobial properties of silver also reduce and prevent the risk of secondary infection. If a secondary infection is already present, it can help clear it up.

Meanwhile, researchers at National Jewish Health, in Denver, Colorado, are investigating how to alter the immune response of atopic dermatitis patients to increase the production of LL-37 and HBD-2, two antimicrobial peptides that fight bacteria, viruses and fungi and are produced in reaction to skin inflammation. People with atopic dermatitis don’t produce effective amounts of these peptides, and the study’s senior author, Dr Donald Leung, says researchers will be working over the next several years to learn how to foster their production. Silver, however, replaces these peptides with its own antimicrobial properties.

Bio-active silver hydrosol made with ultra-pure medical-grade water has an average particle size of 0.8 nanometers—and up to 98% positive silver activity, according to a 2009 study performed at the University of Miami Medical School by Dr Xlaorong Zhu, senior research scientist of the Marine and Atmospheric Division.

Bio-active silver hydrosol and Argentum metallicum can be found in homeopathic silver first -aid gel or in bio-active silver hydrosol.
