Mothers of newborns generally produce pure colostrum for the first two to five days after birth. After this, they produce “transitional milk,” a blend of colostrum and breast milk. Then comes breast milk, which is high in sugar, fat and proteins but contains lesser amounts of peptides and poly-peptides directly from the mother’s own immune, nervous, and hormonal systems.

For those first few days following birth, the baby’s stomach is still not closed. The body’s epithelial and vascular tissues are lining the vessels and barriers. The skin is developing its own immunity. The gut is being colonized by bacterial strains, hopefully beneficial ones. The brain is growing excessively rapidly.
