A unique, low-calorie sugar substitute is good for healthy smiles.

Writing in BMC Oral Health, the researchers tested the impact of three sugars, sorbitol, xylitol and erythritol, on the prevention of cavities and gum disease in school kids whose average age was 11.

In this 3-year study, 90 kids consumed candies containing sorbitol, xylitol or erythritol for sweeteners.

After three years, the microbiome of the erythritol candy group significantly differed from the others.

Both erythritol and xylitol reduced the number of observed harmful bacterial types in comparison to the control group. But, the greatest health benefits came from erythritol, which was associated with the lowest prevalence of caries-related Mutans streptococci and fewest caries during the study period.
