Lactobacillus is a major part of both—digestive and vaginal microbiota. The necessity to nourish an ample population of good probiotics is well known by now. However, whenever cystitis or another UTI hits us, we rush to take antibiotics, which kill the good bacteria not only in the stomach, but down there too, and sometimes only exacerbate the condition.

This digestive health probiotic was first isolated from a human in 1985 by Tufts University researchers Barry Goldin, MS, PhD and Sherwood L. Gorbach, MD.

Over the course of a decade, Goldin and Gorbach (for whom the strain is named) tested variations until they discovered one that was resistant to stomach and bile acids and sticky enough to adhere to epithelial tissues in the gut. One 2014 research article notes, “Various health effects are well documented including the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal infections and diarrhea and stimulation of immune responses that promote vaccination or even prevent certain allergic symptoms.”
