Chemical Bullets

More kids die from undisclosed pollutants and contaminants than from guns

If I were to tell you that your child has a 1 in 285 chance of being shot, perhaps not even killed, just shot and hurt by the time she was 20, you would be unnerved, alert and sitting on the edge of your seat imagining the bullet. I wouldn’t blame you. Like you we have kids in school and we worry everyday now about their safety especially when we hear about non-specified threats. But I am talking about a chemical bullet. The in in 285 figure is how many of our children here in the US will get cancer by the time they are 20. It’s a staggering number.

Each year in the U.S. there are an estimated 15,780 children between the ages of birth and 19 years of age who are diagnosed with cancer. The numbers are so immense that they dwarf even gun violence. This is a form of corporate violence. I know that’s strong and some will say radical. Maybe the wording is a bit bombastic. But I am reacting to something that is like Niagara Falls.

A 2017 report finds gun-related injuries are now the third leading cause of death among children ages 1 to 17 in the United States. The results show that almost 1,300 children in the U.S. die from gunshot wounds yearly, and an additional 5,790 children are treated for gunshot wounds and survive each year, the researchers found. The leading cause of death for this age group is unintentional injuries (other than firearm injuries), primarily due to motor vehicle crashes or drowning; the second leading cause of death for this age group is cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In other words, "About 19 children a day die or are medically treated in an emergency department for a gunshot wound in the U.S.," said lead study author Katherine A. Fowler, a behavioral scientist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. [5 Milestones in Gun Control History]

On the other hand, globally, 300,000 kids annually die from chemical assaults. That means a child is diagnosed with cancer on this planet every 3 minutes.
