One of the reasons women experience 2x the rate of Alzheimer’s compared to men is low testosterone levels. After menopause the ovaries produce less estrogen and testosterone; these declines are linked with dementia risk.






For a long time, medical science and media reports focused on the protective effects of estrogen on women’s age-related cognition issues to the exclusion of the other hormone. One reason for this is because of the large-scale estrogen replacement therapy studies done over the last six decades, funded by pharma in support of its ERT drugs such as Premarin. Yet the brute force of testosterone is something women’s aging bodies might miss.

Women who rubbed minute amounts of testosterone gel onto their arms, shoulders or tummy every day for 6 months experienced reductions in dementia risk factors.


TESTING TESTOSTERONE
Among the 96 women who used the real gel or a fake one via transdermal delivery for 6 months, those receiving the male hormone ended up doing estimably better on difficult brain challenges, the Daily Mail reported. “The hormone group performed significantly better at verbal learning, where they listened to dozens of different words and had to recall as many as they could. They also scored higher in tests designed to assess the efficiency of their short-term memory. Boosting brain function is thought to be one of the most effective ways of warding off dementia, as it helps strengthen connections between brain cells.”

The study, though reported in the media, was not medically published. The article didn’t go into the side effects that can accompany testosterone medication. Besides undesirable masculinizing effects, it can cause cancer.

The small amount in the gel may or may not be safe for long-term use. The study was only six months and cancers can take years to develop.


NOT JUST A PUZZLE PROBLEM
We all know about the importance of The New York Times crossword puzzle to the national IQ along with Sudoku, reading, tai chi, yoga and other activities for boosting brain power. But this isn’t quite the same effect as what hard resistance training provides. Weight training is what smacks up the T hormone till it rings the bell. So weight lifting could be an alternative to the gel and probably a lot healthier.

MUSCLE MASS POWER
This kind of T explosions requires sustained higher levels and that means one requires muscle mass. Sustaining optimal T levels in both sexes requires intensive muscle building. That’s because muscle is the body’s productive source of testosterone. Higher lean muscle mass raises the levels of testosterone in the blood. This can’t be emphasized enough. Women who weight train into their seventies and eighties and do it tough are far less likely to develop dementia. They can’t afford it, and their bodies know it. They surge with testosterone, just enough to keep them energized and repairing.

RESISTANCE EXERCISE
To get at the root of testosterone production in women and men they must build-up muscle mass. Heaving iron builds up T levels. “In young, healthy women, resistance exercise can induce transient increases in testosterone.”

In muscle, testosterone stimulates protein synthesis (anabolic effect) and inhibits protein degradation (anti-catabolic effect); combined, these effects account for the promotion of muscle growth by testosterone. This effect translates to the brain muscle. It stays strong to accommodate the demands of the weights.

In both men and women acute increases in testosterone can be induced by resistance exercise but to keep the body producing hormones at a higher optimum frequency the resistance exercise session should contain high volume and metabolic demand “in order to induce an acute testosterone response.” That means: be a beast.

TESTOSTERONE FOODS

COCONUT OIL Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) found in coconut oil builds up testosterone one. “CLA supplementation induced an increase in testosterone levels,” says a study.

BOVINE COLOSTRUM The first milk of all mammals contains testosterone boosting peptides and growth factors necessary to build and repair muscle that auto-stimulates testosterone production. BC is a foundational food to stave off dementia and muscle loss. Colostrum aids the body to keep T levels higher and longer.

FENUGREEK The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of Trigonella foenum-graecum (fenugreek) seed extract on sex hormones and sexual function in healthy menstruating women who reported low sexual drive. This short term, single site, double blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study was conducted on 80 women, aged 20 to 49 years. Participants were receiving an oral dose of a standardised T. foenum-graecum seed extract (libifem) at a dose of 600 mg/day or placebo over two menstrual cycles. Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, progesterone, androstenedione, total and free testosterone, estradiol (E2), luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, sex hormone binding globulin and cholesterol were measured at baseline and 8 weeks. “There was a significant increase in free testosterone and E2 in the active group…”
