The most exciting season of the year is also a dreaded time for millions of people, especially women. For those who can’t relate: the world we live in is filled with hate and criticism from attacking, opinionated people who choose to project their own insecurities onto those with imperfections. There isn’t a place in the world that doesn’t possess beautiful and smart women with a little (or a lot of) extra weight or simply extra skin due to aging. All these women have their reasons, whether its due to lack of time, education, privilege, energy, finances or simply age, as to why they aren’t ready for the skin-showing summer wardrobe to come out of the closet. The fashion industry, although worldly promoting slender figures, actually caters to every body type and size; the task is to discover and know what fits your body best, and there will be no cause for lack of confidence when stepping out in any type of scene.

The Hourglass Figure

The hourglass body is considered the perfect shape in many countries, esp cially in North and South America. If you live in the US, show off your womanly curves without too much highlighting of the most voluptuous parts. Wear tight-fitted clothes, especially around your waist. Go for tank tops and dresses rather than t-shirts, which may make you seem bigger than you are, and pick figure-hugging skirts and skinny pants over loose bottoms. Tight fit dresses are a must have for an hour glass figured lady, and if you don’t have a flat stomach, then a big belt can help make it look less noticeable. Both short and long jackets are also recommended to come in at the waist, and many of those come with a belt to make the waist more accentuated. Smooth fabrics such as silk will emphasize both your curves and the waist. Stick to solid colors and less patterns to make your figure look more slender.

Ladies with a larger bust and smaller hips like to show off their gifts with low-cut and V-neck tops. You can add curves to your hips by wearing tight clothing around the waist and bottoms that are puffier below the waist. Another alternative for bottoms is hip-hugging pants, but only if you can find the right fitting material, such as polyester and spandex, that shapes the butt in the right way, which can be tricky. Find the pants cut that fit perfectly around the hips, check the material and then look for it when shopping for pants, shorts and skirts. White and brightly colored bottoms will also visually increase the size of your hips. Belts and wrap dresses can accentuate the waistline if tied on the lower part of the waist. Patterns on the lower part of the body are also suitable for this body type.

This is the most common body type amongst women. Wear dark, especially black, single pattern tight-fitting tops to slim down your waist (create your waist if needed). To make the top half of your body seem smaller compared to the rest of your body, try a wider skirt that starts at the waist of a little higher. Low-cut tops and V-necks will steer attention away from the waist. Silk and other soft and flowy fabrics, however, will distort the waistline. With skinny jeans and pants pair a loose, solid colored top; this way your slimmer legs will take away from the torso. The fun part about having this body type is that you get to color block to your own taste; just be sure to wear a darker hue on the upper body.

Opt for solid colored bottoms, while tops with patterns will balance the upper and lower body. Wear tops that are fitted and accent the waistline. Sleeveless and strapless tops and dresses will draw attention to the upper body, while push-up bras and V-neck tops lengthen the upper body. A-line skirts, short or long, will balance out to lower and top part of the body. Avoid bottoms that begin at the top part of the waist. Dark and solid colors work well on the bottom, and straight and widecut pants look better than skin-tight bottoms. Capri pants are most likely not your thing; go for short shorts or pants down to the ankles. The same goes for skirts: A-line short skirts and long dresses are made for the both the triangle and pear-shaped body types. And lastly— heels, heels, heels!

Also known as “apple shaped,” this body type may be the most difficult to style. A variety of loose fitted tops in both solid and color patterns that won’t attract attention to the waist are a must for every round shaped girl. Don’t wear tops that are too short or too long; long tops may make you look shorter and short ones are simply unflattering. Avoid tops that are too loose as they can add extra volume. Darker colors on the upper body, paired with low cuts, will also slim down the waist. V-necks will lengthen the body and make it look thinner. Cardigans and nonlight long jackets were made for apple shaped women. Wear dresses that begin at the top of the waist and end anywhere below the knee. As for pants, avoid skinny jeans and yoga pants and go for the ones with a straight or wide leg.

Avoid skintight pants—they will accent the bum and make it look bigger than it actually is. Opt for straight pants and jeans. Skirts are fit for pear shaped ladies as you have the option to pick the length you’re most comfortable with, one that highlights the slim part of the legs. A-line skirts and dresses are made for this feminine body type. Accentuate your upper body with low-cut tops, neck accessories and jewelry.
