Aluminium (Al)-based antiperspirants, antacids and cooking utensils may be causing premature brain cell aging, according to a study in Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy. Alumnium was first isolated as an element in 1827 and its use began only after 1886. “The evidence suggests that the Al can potentiate oxidative stress and inflammatory events and finally leads to cell death,” said the scientists who referenced the peer-reviewed medical studies in their article. “Al is considered as a well-established neurotoxin and has a link between the exposure and development of neurodegenerative diseases, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, Gulf war syndrome and Parkinsonism.”

Bigger Molecules Are Safer

Almost all antiperspirants use aluminum-based compounds but safer mineral-based underarm products exist. Crystal deodorant stones and sprays are made from potassium aluminum sulfate. These products are free from suspect chemicals such as aluminum chlorohydrate, aluminum chloride, aluminum hydroxybromide and aluminum zirconium. Other safer deodorant products use herbs such as tea tree oil or nutrients like vitamin C.

Potassium alum or ammonium alum are unaltered mineral salts made up of molecules that are thought to be so large their absorption into the body via the skin is limited. Instead, the larger salts act like a protective layer, smothering odor-causing bacteria, yet largely unfaltering the pool of good sweet-smelling bacterial strains that also exist on the skin in these areas. Because they are less irritating, treatment centers often recommend the crystal stones to breast cancer patients undergoing radiatiotherapy.
