A should-be-a-doctor, as her orthopedic surgeon father, instead she ended up in prison as Alex Vause, love interest of Piper Chapman, in “Orange is The New Black,” the most watched Netflix series that captures life in a women’s prison.

Before that, after she left “That ’70s Show,” she played Chelsea in “Are You There, Chelsea?” based on Chelsea Handler’s book Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea.

But through it all her digestive issues plagued her so badly she needed two different dress sizes daily. In our HealthyLivinG interview, Laura reveals how she got in the greatest shape of her life with her new diet highlighted in The Stash Plan.

HealthyLivinG: Congratulations on your SAG award.

Laura Prepon: Thank you. It was just such an honor. It was a fantastic weekend.

HealthyLivinG: You looked beautiful, by the way; your dress was just wow.

Laura Prepon: Thank you. I felt like a princess.

HealthyLivinG: I’d like to talk about Orange Is The New Black for a little bit. How did you prepare for the role of Alex Vause and what was most difficult leading up to it?

Laura Prepon: I actually got the role on 14 hours’ notice. I got it on a Friday and then on Monday, I moved to New York to start season one. So it was two days’ notice, I guess. As an actor, that happens a lot, but, sometimes, it’s great to just get thrown into it. But honestly, she’s such an amazing character and I just love playing her so much and it was actually not hard preparing for Alex because there are so many similarities in her that are me. I’ve never snuck drugs across international borders but I think for a lot of us on the show, you just find the things that humanize the character and that you can relate to and that’s what I did. And I love her so much, I love playing her every day; it’s a special job.

HealthyLivinG: What is Alex’s character trait that you think you most relate to?

Laura Prepon: I think she’s a straight shooter, and she and Piper have a fascinating relationship; it’s passionate, volatile and tumultuous but I think Alex is who she is. Piper is very material and could be manipulative at times. Alex can be manipulative at times as well but she’s much more of a confront-things-head-on type of person, and I tend to be like that in my life where something’s gone wrong. I’m very open and I just talk about anything and I feel like Alex is like that where she’s just a straight shooter. She doesn’t let people pull the wool over her eyes and I don’t either. It’s incredible that I get to do what I love every day but you definitely learn to take care of yourself at a young age. I started working when I was 15. I moved out of the house and to a foreign country at 18 and you learn to take care of yourself at a young age and you learn to have a good head on your shoulders and have street smarts and I relate to Alex in that way.
